The button only gets the background colors when I apply the style "button" directly to it during the textbutton bit. On the notion of the start button gaining focus, do you mean I am actively hovering my mouse over it? Because that would not be the case here. Unless it gets put in manually by the engine itself, to my knowledge, it shouldn't be getting those properties (I have not done a thorough look-through of the engine code, outside of character.py and related files so that could be the case). In reference, I made sure to delete style button: properties gui.button_properties("button") (or rather, comment it out). I'd say it's semi-hardcoded - you have the option of using the gui system, or disabling it and creating your own styles and screens. If you want to do your own thing, you can change the definition of buttons in screens.rpy, so that it doesn't use these default places. Gui.button_properties simplifies theming by imposing fixed location for files. My guess is the rest are being given more specific image backgrounds by gui.button_properties: The Start button gains focus, so hover_background "#00a" applies to it, so it gets the colored background. It seems silly if it actually is hardcoded paths as that's bad for organization of projects as well as conflicting with being able to add/replace other GUI elements (such as the radio button) I am unsure if this issue is why, but I cannot find any documentation on it. On a related note, I want to change the location of files where the game/gui/button/idle_background.png to game/assets/gui/button/idle_background.png (and all the other ones in the gui/button/ folder) However I cannot seem to do this. ![]() should replace the default button ) but this does not seem correct as is. I am unsure what the intended behavior is (if you need to declare style "button" or if having style button. However if I change the background to foreground "#006" and don't change a thing about the screen navigation bit, all of it turns dark blue as foreground. The start button has the blue background around it, however the others do not.
